Assignment 2

Hi all,

Working through assignment 2 at the moment, been a bit of a crazy time. been working, doing my Cert 3 in Outdoor Recreation, and trying to get this assignment done, Lol. But I know I have it a lot better than some people who have kids or have to worry about a full time job, so I’m not complaining 🙂 It should not be too hard getting this assignment done, although I always leave it to the last minute…. bad habit I guess, It’s usually the referencing that takes ages for  me because I leave that all to the end… MMM anyway.

Talk soon,

Joey.

ICT Based Learning

Hi all, working through this module I have come across from some article and examples that demonstrate the importance of ICT’s impact in classrooms. I recently came across this article focusing on ICT based learning, “The tremendous progress in information and communication technology, the scenario of contemporary teaching techniques has entirely changed. The new area has given new challenges and duties to teachers. So the teachers of 21 century should shed traditional concepts and techniques of class room teaching and should adopt the innovative teaching techniques. In this globalization, the tradition of teaching English has been changed drastically. Technology is considered prominent driver of both social and linguistic change. In this connection Even Gruddol (1997:16) has stated that technology lies at the heart of the globalization process; effecting education work and culture”.

Example on study desk also emulate the value of ICT’s in the classroom evidence by this table of inquiry presented in EDC3100, it demonstrates how ICT can be used as a problem solver and draw conclusions.

Learning Problem Technology Solution Relative Advantage
Concepts are new, foreign (e.g., mathematics, physics principles). Graphics, tools, simulations, video-based problem scenarios Visual examples clarify concepts and applications
Concepts are abstract, complex (e.g., physics principles, biology systems). Maths tools (Geometer’s SketchPad), simulations, problem-solving software, spreadsheet, exercises, graphing calculators Graphics displays make abstract concepts more concrete; students can manipulate system to see how they work
Time-Consuming manual skills (e.g., handwriting, calculations, data collection) interfere with learning high-level skills Tool software (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets) and probeware Attention-getting displays, immediate feedback, and interaction combine to create motivating practice
Students cannot see relevance of concepts to their lives (e.g., history, social studies) Stimulations, internet activities, video-based problem scenarios Visual, interactive activities help teachers demonstrate relevance.

Module 2

HI,

So getting onto module 2 it seems the focus is going to be around unit plans (which is what assignment 2 is based upon) and more specifically the “Backward design” approach. The following diagram demonstrates the approach.

Backward_Design_Model
Sourced- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Backward_Design_Model.gi

The module contains four parts that are aimed at helping to develop different stages of the assessment unit plans. These are 1. desired results, 2. assessment evidence, 3. learning plan and 4. the essay. This structure will be helpful in completing the assignment.

bye.

Back At It!

Hi all,

Better late then never right… I’m back into the books after a well enjoyed break from study. I’ve noticed a few fellow students like Kirby, are in the same boat as me, just now getting back into the books. Just had a brief look at assignment 2, seems like a bit of work but should hopefully do alright. my result from assignment 1 came back, unfortunately they were not has good as I had hoped but all is good because I passed 🙂 Right….

Prac is also on the horizon for this subject which will be intense. haven’t got my placement yet but hopefully it shows up soon so I will know where I will be going.

All for now,

Joey

Da Truth

This comic strip from week 3 portrays a great truth when it comes to some unfortunate truths in classrooms today. My first thoughts on this teaching pattern is LAZY, but after a few pracs its easy to understand that sometimes its just easier to get students to work off sheets. But thats not what ICT is about and should not be limited to such mundane tasks and has such greater potential.

For now, Joey.

Anti-social behaviour

In a recent post from Kirbybunt she stated that she noticed anti-social behaviour by an Oz-tag team she was coaching. Anti-social, as in the sense that they were on their mobile phones and not talking to each other.

I too notice this behaviour at my weightlifting training, everyone sits around between sets and trolls Facebook.

In a study performed by the Networked Society Blog they found that an ironically popular theme in social media is that smartphones have made people “antisocial.”

This is an unfortunate trend but I believe ICT’s generally have a positive impact on society.

All for now, Joey

Concept map

Hey y’all,

Here is my concept map based upon the the scenario that a video did not show up on a forum that was posted up.map

Now the truth is that no model is perfect, especially this. Jonassen, Strobel and Gottdenker also agree of this matter with their conclusions within this link.

Till next time.

Schema

This exercise was run in week 1 and gave me new insight into personal conceptions. The idea was to fill in the blank words within a sentence that would provoke different outcomes depending on the individual and their interests.

my final version looked like this,

“my response, very late..

The questions that people face as they raise children from infants to adult are not easy to an answer. Both females and males can become concerned when health problems such as coughing arise anytime after the early stage to later life. Experts recommend that young children should have plenty of sensible and nutritious food for healthy growth. Boys and girls should not share the same bed or even be in the same room. They may be afraid of the death.”

I then found out that what I thought would have been the standered response was very different from many of the other students.

This quote from a students from S2, 2013 sums ups why the response can differ.

“It was an interesting exercise. I have since looked at the original. I also asked my partner and one of my sons in particular and interestingly enough one was all about poultry and the other was all about cats with the Panther and Feline being afraid of dogs. Neither had anything to do with children/parenting but then neither has raised small children nor interested in education at all.”

NBN

Heyyy.

Soo I am finally able to get back on the internet after our services where changing over from ADSL to NBN. The struggle has been realll! I have previously blogged about what it would be like to do life without ICT’s and I kind of found this out this week, haha it was great.

This reminded me of an article I read from matthewscheiwe blog, stating the 5 Pros and Cons of Using Technology in your Classroom: How Much Do you Agree?, written by Sophia Harris (2015).

Some of her pros included

  • Independent learning for students: where the educator could assign  students to work in a group and encourage them to complete a set task by using the technology and check out on the academic queries if they arise.
  • Life skills via technology: Where educators could prepare students with the vital skills like as focusing on creating presentation, maintaining proper etiquette and writing emails which could be inculcated in the classroom’s ICT equipment.

While some of the cons could include:

  • Forgetting the basic ways of studying where students focus more on enhancing their knowledge in the use of the technology for even the simple problems don’t use their minds at all like they would using books.
  • Disconnection with Social Media, where students’ ability to verbally communicate ideas could decline unless creating assignments in the class which are using both technology tools and oral presentations like power-points.

And I guess another con is the one i experienced this week, when the power is down, it just ain’t gonna happen!
